Post-University grief is a real thing but an issue that we keep shying away from discussing publicly. In an age where people post, tweet and filter every little detail of their lives on social media, it’s easy to feel alone as a recent graduate in the emotions that you’re experiencing when all your peers’ lives seem to be going successfully without any obvious difficulties. There’s something unexpected about the emotions you can go through following graduating from University and saying goodbye to the safety net of education. Despite this, I have found people are not prepared nor want to talk about the low points and struggles they are going through, as well as the emotional pressures of adulthood. So for all of you that are going through the post-University grief and think you’re alone, I’m here to open up and let others know that what we’re going through is a normal transition into adulthood.

  1. Denial

You’ve probably still got that student life mentality. Maybe you’re blowing through your monthly paychecks thinking that student loan will drop in couple of weeks? Or perhaps you just can’t deal with the mundane responsibilities that come with being a proper grown up yet? Either way it will all kick in real soon that adulthood is something you can’t escape.

  1. Anger

It’s only natural that while navigating this new time in your life that you experience some anger and frustration. You’re probably being faced with the annoying ‘So what are you doing now?’ question and people questioning your current path in life.

  1. Bargaining

This stage is mixed with a hell of a lot of confusion. You might ask yourself, ‘What do I actually want to do with my life?’ or ‘Should I do a Masters?’ all in your attempt to regain control of your life. In your pursuit to rebuild some structure, you’ll find that many options come into consideration to how you want to lead your life.

  1. Depression

There’s depression, as in the mental health condition, but for this purpose I’m referring to that passiveness, idleness and even loneliness you can feel during this period. At times it feels like you’ve been infected with a tiredness that just never seems to go away. It seems like life is going great for everyone around you and you’re the only one struggling to make sense of it all, while also feeling lost and isolated.

  1. Acceptance

It might take some time, but you will get here. You’ll find yourself feeling better about yourself and although you might be unsure of what the world has instore for you, you’ll have come to the conclusion that everything will happen for a reason. I’ll admit, it can all be a bit petrifying but this next chapter in life will bring about some exciting experiences and opportunities to come your way.

Post University Grief is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s only natural when going through the transition from student to graduate to professional. I can’t say there’s a quick fix to this all, but I’ve found talking about it helps a lot. Chatting with friends and sharing our experiences and what we’ve done to get through it has been truly beneficial. It can feel like you’re stuck in this moment in life but you will overcome it. Before you know it you will be looking back and wondering what all the worry was for.
